The Sharjah Police are investigating a robbery in which thieves made off with Dh1.5 million worth of gold jewellery from a showroom in Rolla, Sharjah.
The theft occurred at 4am at the Sharjah showroom of Malabar Gold. The alarm system connected to the Sharjah Police operations room set off as the culprits broke in through the front door.
Police rushed to the area to collect evidence and lift fingerprints and alerted the management of the shop about the robbery at their premises.
Investigating officials have already reviewed footage taken by the store's CCTV cameras, which show two men wearing Pakistani national dress committing the crime.
The theft was conducted within six minutes, as the suspects snatched jewellery from the display shelves. The large safe containing more jewellery and cash was, however, ignored. The police are currently questioning people and have launched a manhunt for the thieves.
Colonel Abdullah bin Amer, Deputy Sharjah Police Chief, said that around 70 per cent of jewellery shops, banks and exchanges have already been connected to the police operations room for early detection of thefts.
Police are currently working on installing 500 cameras in various commercial areas of the city as part of the 'Sharjah is a Safe City' initiative. These advanced cameras analyse the scene and footage, and are being installed in three phrases. They are linked to the operations room and alert the police through messages about any crime or suspicious movements taking place around commercial or industrial areas to allow quick response to prevent crimes before they happen.
This is the second major robbery at a Sharjah jewellery shop in the last two years. In the first case, cameras and early detection alarms alerted police, allowing them to quickly dispatch officers and arrest the suspects in possession of gold and diamonds as they attempted to flee the scene of the crime.
