Are you an exceptional teacher working in the GCC?
If so, step forward as the UAE is yet again putting the spotlight on the best educators in the region after it announced the launch of the 'Mohamed Bin Zayed Award for Best GCC Teacher' on Monday. With a total prize fund of Dh6 million - Dh1 million awarded to each outstanding teacher - the new initiative was announced using the official Twitter account of the office of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
"Mohamed bin Zayed orders the launch of Mohamed Bin Zayed Best GCC Teacher Award, in appreciation of the role a teacher plays in raising better generations," the @MBZNews tweet read. The criteria for the award will be split into five sections, with varying percentages weighted against each section.
A teacher's 'Innovation and Creation' will account for 20 per cent of the total mark; 'Positive Citizenship, Loyalty and Belonging' will account for 10 per cent; 'Development and Sustainable Learning' 20 per cent; 'Vocational and Social Pioneering' 10 per cent; with the largest chunk of the score (40 per cent) being attributed to the candidate's 'Excellence in Achievement'.

How to sign up for the award:

1. A teacher should nominate himself/herself through the Award's online portal
2. Fill in the required personal information
3. Fill in the information pertaining to each section of criteria
The award, which will be hosted annually across the GCC, comes in light of the leadership's focus on the importance of education. It will aim to highlight and recognise excellent teachers in the field, and by laying down a criterion that focuses on five key features in learning, it will also motivate educators to continue to be innovative.
In an address to the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec), His Highness Sheikh Mohamad bin Zayed said: "The teacher will remain a symbol of giving and exertion...we shall be supporting and backing him/her by all means, in a way that can fulfill the highest degrees of excellence in his/her capabilities and skills."
And Hussain Al Hammadi, the Minister of Education added: "The teacher is the cornerstone of the education process (and is responsible for) the emerging and distinctive progress of education in the GCC states." For educators in the UAE, the news has been welcomed too.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Clive Pierrepont, director of communications at Taaleem said: "Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan stated 'education is a country's single most important priority and investing in the educational development of the individual represents the only real investment.'
I think it is awesome that the efforts of UAE teachers will be recognised at the very highest level by this initiative. These awards will not only be an acknowledgement of an individual's achievements but will also highlight the outstanding dedication that educators throughout the nation bring to their profession. Hearing their inspiring stories will also bring education visibly into the nation's focus and will, hopefully, encourage young, talented and enthusiastic graduates to join the profession."
And Dr Ashok Kumar, CEO of The Indian High School Dubai, shared the same consensus.
"This is a great initiative to laud the efforts of teachers in the Gulf. Teachers are the first link of our children to the outside world. A great teacher can ignite a passion for lifelong learning among children. He/she is someone who takes learning beyond the text and classroom. I'm sure there is hardly anyone who does not remember their best teachers that they had during their school years. Such is the impact of a great teacher." He said the last few years have seen a "tremendous growth in the education sector in the UAE", with education no longer "confined to the realm of prescribed syllabus". "This award will motivate the teaching community to give their best."
