Dubai - The bus crashed into a metal barrier and flipped over.
Ten people were injured in Dubai after the bus they were travelling on crashed into a metal barrier early Thursday morning, the police said. The driver reportedly dozed off behind the wheel and lost control of the bus, causing it to flip over on Umm Suqeim Road.
The accident happened around 6am this morning just after the Zayed Bin Hamadan Al Nahyan roundabout towards the Sheikh Zayed Road, said Brig Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic Police.
“The bus driver obviously hadn’t got adequate rest or sleep, so he nearly caused the death of several people,” Brig Al Mazrouei said.
Traffic investigators reported that as the driver dozed off, the 32-passenger bus rammed into the barrier on the right side of the road. “The collision’s impact caused the bus to skid back to the left side and flip over,” the officer said.
“Traffic patrols and first responders were immediately dispatched to the accident site, supporting the ambulance and other emergency teams in taking the injured passengers to a hospital,” he added.
Brig Al Mazrouei urged companies to communicate with their drivers and ensure they understand the importance of having plenty of rest before transporting workers or going on any journey. He warned that deaths and injuries resulting from accidents involving mass transport constitute a “large number of total road fatalities” recorded in the emirate.
