A housewife has been charged in the Court of First Instance with smuggling and possessing 2,400 medically-controlled pills.
The 33-year-old Indian woman was arrested on August 28 at the Dubai International Airport, when she allegedly tried to smuggle the large quantity of the drug.
A 64-year-old Indian man, who works at Dubai Municipality, is accused of aiding and abetting her. Both of them did not attend the hearing on Wednesday.
A customs inspector said she was on duty at 6:00 am on August 28 at Terminal 1 when another colleague asked her to check the defendant's baggage through the X-Ray system. "I had some suspicions, so I took her to the private room for search and inspection. She remained silent when I asked her about anything she might want to declare," the 27-year-old inspector said during the prosecution investigation.
The inspector searched the traveller's baggage and found medicine pills between the clothes. "She said she brought the pills from India for a relative's treatment. I handed the woman over along with the seized tablets to the administrative office at the airport," the inspector said.
The trial has been adjourned to December 7.
