The Abu Dhabi Police are handing out digital stickers with traffic awareness messages to motorists at security checkpoints at the entrance of Abu Dhabi. The move aims to promote road safety in the emirate.
Traffic personnel are fixing the stickers containing a barcode on vehicles' windshields. On scanning it with their mobile phones, motorists can view a traffic awareness video that urges drivers to adhere to the traffic rules for their safety and that of other road users.
The awareness videos cover topics such as the importance of giving priority to pedestrians at zebra crossings; leaving an adequate safety distance between vehicles; adhering to traffic signals; not allowing children under the age of 10 to sit in the front seats of vehicles; and adhering to the maximum speed limits on the roads.
"The video messages will cover a different traffic topic every week to increase awareness among drivers," the police said in a statement.
Last month, the police issued a traffic law that hiked fines and defined new rules for vehicle impoundment. The new policy that took effect on September 9 had listed out a number of offences punishable by impoundment as well as fines of up to Dh50,000.
The violations include street racing, driving a car without valid number plates, causing damage to police vehicles, jumping the red light, failure to give priority to pedestrians crossing the road, sudden deviation, causing an accident due to excessive speed and tailgating, among others.
