“It was a day off for two female drivers and we could not stop the service, therefore, male drivers were allowed to transport passengers from the Dubai Airport,” said Ammar bin Tamim, Director of Dubai Taxi Department yesterday.

Launched on January 1, a senior official from the RTA said that the authority was operating 50 vehicles with pink-coloured rooftops to be driven by 100 trained drivers.

“The service will only be provided to female passengers in taxis driven by female drivers so that privacy of women can be ensured,” said the official.

However, Tamim clarified that the taxi was allowed to transport families from the airport only. Carrying passengers from any other part of the city was banned.

Another senior official had said earlier, “This service will provide a secure transportation for women who wish to be mobile because for long, women have pressed the need for women-only taxi service with all standards of comfort, safety and privacy.”

“The drivers have all undergone intensive training on how to deal with women and children, and emergency situations,” he added.
