Taxi fare increased by Dh2 in Sharjah

Sharjah - "The move is meant to help improve the shuttle services being rendered to our customers."

Taxi passengers in Sharjah will need to shell out an additional Dh2 at the end of every trip, Khaleej Times can reveal. Sources at the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority said the new tariff took effect from December 1.
In October 2015, residents were asked to shell out an additional Dh1.5 at the end of every taxi trip in Sharjah. With the new hike, the minimum fare in Sharjah taxis now stands at Dh13.5.

According to the SRTA, the hike would "help improve services" and was implemented after a "number of studies and surveys". "Studies showed that the taxi fare in Sharjah was the lowest as compared to other emirates," a source said. "This small hike will help hone the skills of the cabbies of the four franchise taxi companies operating in Sharjah."
Residents said the hike would discourage them from taking cabs. "I think I will now go for public buses or even buy a cheap car," said Ahmad Gamal, an Egyptian resident.

Ashraf Al Saad, a Palestinian resident, said: "I guess this will discourage people from taking cabs. They will now go for public buses or possibly resort to carpooling."
Rasha Abdulaleem, a Syrian teacher, said she uses Sharjah taxis frequently. "This hike will affect my expenses as I will have to pay Dh80 to Dh100 more every month."
