The wettest January in the UAE's history is set to get wetter with more rains forecast for this week. According to the five-day forecast issued by the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), rainfall is expected on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
The conditions are expected to be cloudy through the week, with wind speeds reaching 45kmph on Wednesday. The seas are forecast to be rough on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Fog and mist have also been forecast over some internal and coastal areas.
Non-stop rains fell across the emirates over the last two weeks. The country received its highest rainfall in 45 years between January 9 and 12 when it recorded 194.4mm rain in Al Ain's Khatm Al Shakla. In just two days (January 11 and 12), the UAE's 140 dams collected 36 million cubic metres of rainwater.
In an interview last week, Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, told Khaleej Times that the rains helped boost freshwater reserves considerably. He attributed a combination of climate change and cloud-seeding operations for the incessant downpour.
