Delayed flight from Dubai saves passenger from Ethiopian Airlines crash

Ahmed Khalid was bound to fly from Dubai to Addis Ababa bound for Nairobi.

The doomed Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed just six minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa on Sunday, killing all 149 passengers and crew. However, one passenger cheated death as he missed taking the ill-fated plane due to a delayed connecting flight.

Ahmed Khalid was bound to fly from Dubai to Addis Ababa, and onwards to Nairobi. "It was from Dubai to Addis Ababa and then from Addis Ababa to Nairobi but because of the delay from Dubai I missed the first flight. So when I reached Addis Ababa they told me to take second flight which I said was fine," The Sun quoted Khalid as saying in Globalnews.ca reports.
Khalid said his rescheduled flight was delayed too and everyone around at the airport were clueless about the delays in flights. Khalid and other passengers came to know about the crash only after a passenger used their phone to discover the news about the crash.  
The CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde Gebremariam, later confirmed that the deceased include eight Americans and Italians, 32 Kenyans, nine Ethiopians, eight Chinese, seven French, 18 Canadians, one Irish, six Egyptians, five from the Netherlands, and four from India and Slovakia.
Yared Getachew, the doomed plane's pilot was a senior captain with over 8,000 hours flying experience, an Ethiopian Airlines spokesman said. It is not yet clear why the crash happened but Flight Radar suggested something went wrong soon after takeoff.
