ISLAMABAD - A son of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is being investigated on charges of involvement in Haj scam, Director-General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Waseem Ahmed informed the Supreme Court here.

The FIA has recorded statements of two lawmakers, Bilal Yasin and Pirzada Syed Ahmed Imran, who accused Abdul Qadir Gilani, elder son of the prime minister, of complicity in the scam, Ahmed told the seven-member bench of the court led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry.
“Parliamentarians Pirzada Syed Ahmed Imran and Bilal Yasin have not only accused Abdul Qadir Gilani but also his close friend Zain Mohammed Sukhaira who went to Jeddah thrice even before the start of the Haj season,” the FIA chief told the court. The SC took suo motu notice of the alleged financial fraud in acquiring accommodation for Pakistani Haj pilgrims in the holy city of Makkah on a letter it received from a Saudi prince. He said Sukhaira had left the country before the start of investigation into the scandal.
Chief Justice Iftikhar reprimanded the FIA chief for being slow in conducting inquiry. Waseem was recently granted extension after attaining age of retirement.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters outside the court, Azam Swati, a former minister in Gilani cabinet, described Yousuf Raza Gilani as “the most corrupt prime minister in the history of Pakistan”.
Swati said he told a cabinet meeting that all leads of corruption pointed to Gilani’s hometown Multan. “The prime minister had brought a bad name to his family. Swati, who belongs to the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F, was sacked by Gilani on charge of indiscipline for accusing another cabinet colleague Hamid Saeed Kazmi of complicity in the scandal.
