“The head of the Iraqi armed forces (Maliki) ordered the formation of an investigative committee over the murder of Sheikh Abdul Jalil al-Fahdawi on Wednesday,” a statement from the premier’s office said.

Fahdawi was the number two in the Sunni Waqf (religious endowments office) and the deputy head of the Committee of Religious Scholars of Iraq, a rival to the Sunni Muslim Scholars Association, which was close to the Sunni insurgency which fought the US and Iraqi army after the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

He was gunned down alongside two of his bodyguards and a relative near his home and mosque in Amriyah, a western district of the Iraqi capital, early on Wednesday.
