A 24-year-old dancer and psychology graduate from Delhi was oblivious that she would inspire a viral trend #SareeFlow on Instagram when she posted a video of herself dancing with a hula hoop while wearing a saree and sneakers!
Eshna Kutty has risen to sudden popularity after netizens were smitten by her hooping skills whilst in a saree. She can be seen dancing to the popular Bollywood song 'Genda Phool' from the movie Delhi 6. "This post is primarily to share with you why I put out #sareeflow as a hashtag. It had been on my mind for months, and the intention was not to create the most sensual saree videos, but to feel so comfortable and happy wearing it without the pressure of being a delicate lady," Kutty wrote captioning her video. Her video grabbed the attention of the 'Genda Phool' singer Rekha Bhardwaj herself who shared the video and commented: "#GendaPhool with hoop n saree @eshnakutty EshnaKutty is awesome". Kutty who has studied Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) at the Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai, told The Indian Express, "Sarees usually feel restrictive, it usually makes you feel like you can't move in it, or be in it a certain way and I came up with the idea of saree flow to sort of break that stereotype." Kutty's mother, journalist Chitra Narayanan, who also shared the video on Twitter wrote: "Woke up to several people Whatsapping me this video! Meet my daughter who has sparked off a #sareeflow trend". A professional hoop dancer and a dance movement practitioner, Kutty said she hopes the trend will add a "unique twist to the global art form" and added that she was happy she didn't have to be "extremely funny or sexy" to have a video go viral.
