Outgoing US President Barack Obama is known to be an avid reader. The new President Donald Trump is no stranger to the literary world either - even though many would have us believe otherwise. Here's a look at what he reads so one can get a glimpse into the inner workings of his mind
A week before he had to leave the White House, Barack Obama sat down with New York Times' chief book critic Michiko Kakutani to discuss how books helped shape his personality and, in turn, the presidency.
"(Reading) reintroduced me to the power of words as a way to figure out who you are and what you think. and to sort through and interpret this swirl of events that is happening around you every minute," he said.
In fact, Obama is the latest to join a long list of literature-loving US Presidents such as John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. Which naturally begs the question - will US President Donald Trump be following in their footsteps?
Well, don't be too surprised if you happen to see Trump's reading list being revealed over the summer. It might not be his most famous trait but the newly-appointed US President does have the habit of mentioning the odd book to the media every now and then. Curious? Read on.
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
This is a book Trump has mentioned on numerous occasions, the latest being in an interview with Hollywood Reporter. All Quiet on the Western Front, he said, "is one of the greatest books of all time". First published in 1929, it gives readers an in-depth look at the horrors of war. It drives home the abysmal conditions soldiers were forced to fight in during World War I, and the stress and detachment that followed when they returned home.
Unlikeable: The Problem with Hillary by Edward Klein
You can say a lot of things about Trump, but you can't say he beats around the bush. In the same interview with Hollywood Reporter, Trump said he was reading "the Ed Klein book on Hillary Clinton". All it took was a little research to find out he was talking about Unlikeable, a critique on Clinton's character written by investigative reporter Edward Klein. The book captures her "unpopularity" and paints the picture of "a woman more associated with scandal than accomplishments".
The Art of War by Sun Tzu
In his 2006 book, Trump 101: The Way to Success, the POTUS mentions and recommends many books, including The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale and William Manchester's biography of Winston Churchill. He also mentions the ancient Chinese military treatise The Art of War by Sun Tzu. The book covers every aspect of war, from assessing whether war is necessary to scoping out the terrain and discovering one's strengths and weaknesses - all in 13 chapters. Take from that what you will.
The Party by Richard McGregor
In a 2011 interview with Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency, Trump said, "I know the Chinese. I've made a lot of money with the Chinese. I understand the Chinese mind". What followed was Trump rattling off the names of books on China he had read over the ages, which included On China by Henry Kissinger and Mao: The Untold Story by Jung Chang. The Party - the first book he listed - looks at how the country's political system paved the way for its rise as a superpower. Well, he may just be learning from example.
