15 nominations for Hamdan Award

Announcing the winners of the awards that will be presented in December, Minister of Health Dr Hanif Hassan said the award is granted each year after thorough research.

“The award’s scientific committee studies the researches thoroughly and examines the resumes of the scientists and research materials carefully and then selects the best local, regional and international practices in the medical,” said the minister on Tuesday.

This year’s Hamdan International Award is nominated for the best scientific accomplishment in the field of diabetes and its discovery to a modern treatment method, new medication or invention of a new technological surgical tool or technique.

“Such an award encourages sciences, researchers and scientists to make greater efforts in enhancing the medical field,” he said.

The minister also announced the association of Hamdan bin Rashid Award for Medical Sciences with the UAE Diabetes Association in organising an international conference on diabetes in December.

The secretary-general of the awards, Professor Najib Khaja said: “Honouring distinct working scientists and doctors in the medical field is considered an important element for motivating them.”

The Grand Hamdan International Award winners this year are Professor Paul Zimmet, Director of International Research, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute for warning the world of the size of the diabetes epidemic and Professor Jaakko Tuomilehtofrom Finland, an acclaimed epidemiologist.

The Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence is awarded for research in osteoporosis, obesity and thyroid disorders.

Other awards have been given for volunteers in Humanitarian Medical Services to the Zayed Initiative for the UAE’s mobile hospital, Dr Prakash and Dr Mandakini Amte for providing free medical services to India’s tribals, Cure International, and to reconstructive plastic surgeon Dr Ashok Gupta.

Arab World Awards for best medical college and institution have been given to the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria, Egypt, Dept of Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology and St George Medical Centre, Lebanon.

Hamdan Award for distinguished personalities from the Arab World have been given to Dr Hussein Al Gezairy, Regional Director for Eastern Mediterranean and Dr Kamel Ajlouni, President of the Jordanian National Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology and Genetics.

In the UAE awards category, the Hamdan Award for Outstanding Clinical Department in the Public Sector has been awarded to Tawam Hospital’s Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Two original research papers have also been selected for awards.
