158 workers complain about salaries, living conditions

DUBAI — About 158 workers from three companies submitted separate complaints against their employers to the Ministry of Labour yesterday.

Workers of a company have alleged non-payment of salaries and bad living conditions at the labour camp.

The ministry communicated with the employer and notified his representative about the complaint.

The company's representative claimed that there was no delay in payment of salaries and improvements were carried out at the labour camp recently.

The ministry asked the employer to submit documents as proof of salary payment and stated that an inspector will visit the labour camp to check the living conditions.

In another complaint, workers who are paid on piecemeal basis pleaded to the ministry to intervene and change the terms of the contract to put them on regular monthly wages.

The workers told the ministry that they feel exploited by their employer as they are paid lesser than the monthly wages recognised in the construction field.

Their request to the company to amend the contract to put them on monthly wages, had been declined.

The company's representative when contacted by the ministry said that the workers had accepted the offered salaries before they came to the country. The ministry promised the workers that it would negotiate on their behalf with the employer to change their labour contracts to facilitate monthly remuneration.
