They were apprehended while trying to use the first fake credit card to buy a valuable watch from a shopping mall in Abu Dhabi.
Colonel Dr Rashid Mohammed Burasheed, the head of the Organised Crime Section of the Criminal Investigation Department of Abu Dhabi Police, said that the duo, after entering the country, moved to a shopping mall in Abu Dhabi.
“The criminals chose a famous jewellery shop to be their first target and were nabbed by a police patrol while they were running away after a failed attempt.” Col Burasheed clarified.
They were planning to purchase expensive goods using the fabricated credit cards which contain balance and credits stolen from all over the globe, Colonel Burasheed added. The first accused, 29, escorted by his 32-year-old accomplice, told the shopkeeper that he would buy a watch worth around Dh25,600 and would pay by credit card.
The woman at the shop suspected the authenticity of the credit card before swiping it. She alerted the police immediately and bought time for the police to come by discussing with the criminals about the products displayed in the shop.
As the duo felt that their plot was uncovered by the seller, they ran out from the shop but a police patrol took them into custody, Col Burasheed said, adding that as many as 22 fake credit cards were recovered from their possession.
During interrogation, they confessed that they had entered the country 10 hours before their arrest. Their plan was to leave the country soon after a shopping spree of valuable objects using the credit cards, he noted. Both the men were referred to the Public Prosecution which accused them of forging an official material and using fake bank cards.
