21,000 Filipino voters register for first time

Ten days before the Overseas Absentee Voting Registration (OAVR) ends on October 31, Filipino expatriates registered at the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai, passed the 21,000 mark for new election registrants.

Earlier, the Consulate General remained open for OAV registration on Fridays of October (5, 12, and 19) and Saturdays (13, and 20) from 9am to 4pm to accommodate those who could not make it on weekdays. Moreover, teams were made available to attend to specially organised registration activities. The OAV Team headed by Vice Consul Geronimo Suliguin conducted mobile registrations in Satwa, Al Quoz, Burjuman and Jebel Ali following the recent mobile registration in cooperation with United Architects of the Philippines – Dubai (UAP).

On October 12, the OAV Team joined the Architects’ Basketball Association in the opening of its 2^nd Season at Sayed bin Sultan Boys School in Satwa. The following day, on October 13, all Filipino staff of Vertical Space, a Filipino company based in Al Quoz Industrial I, Dubai, availed themselves of the OAV registration. The OAV Team also visited churches to encourage Filipinos to participate in the registration process. “On October 23, the OAV Team, in partnership with The Philippine School (TPS) will also hold a one-day campus registration from 9am to 4pm to benefit the faculty, staff, parents, and friends of the school as well as Filipino nationals in the area,” Vice Consul Suliguin said. “Similar activities are also being considered to accommodate as many as new registrants as possible.” Requirement for registration are personal appearance and a photocopy of the passport’s data page of the registrant. — lily@khaleejtimes.com
