30 UAE Students Head for World Skills Competition

ABU DHABI—Thirty students from the UAE will take part in the 40th World Skills Competition, which will be held in the first week of September in Canada, WAM reported on Friday.

The male and female students from the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) and other universities and academic institutions will be among the 900 or more competitors who will compete in 45 skill categories.

The UAE delegation, which departs today for Calgary, is being led by IAT Director-General Dr. Abdullatif Al Shamsi.

The main categories of competition are Transportation and Logistics, Construction and Building Technology, Manufacturing and Engineering Technology (Polymechanics/Automation, Manufacturing Team Challenge, mechatronics etc), Information and Communication Technology, Creative Arts and Fashion, and Social and Personal Services.

The UAE had taken part in the 39^th World Skills Competition held in 2007 in Shizuoka, Japan. The 1^st GCC Skills Competition was held in the UAE in March last year.

According to Jack Dusseldorp, President of WorldSkills International Board, WorldSkills is a powerful means for building a culture respecting global skills. It enables the best of the world’s young skilled people to motivate and inspire successive generations to see that vocational skills can lead to secure and fulfilling lives in a fast-changing, competitive world.
