According to the annual report on infectious diseases in Dohms and private hospitals, at least 35 other people (nationals and expatriates) were found to be suffering from the disease (AIDS) in 2008.
According to the report, a majority of those infected with HIV was expatriates — 174 men and 148 women. Among the Emirati who tested HIV-positive were 24 men and three women.
According to UAE laws, all newcomers seeking residency or work permits have to undergo medical tests for infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and tuberculosis. Those found HIV-positive are immediately deported, while those suffering from other diseases are partly treated.
The report also stated that 11,042 cases of infectious diseases were reported during 2008. While 6,622 of those infected were male expatriates and 2,311 female expatriates, 1,207 were Emirati males
and 902 females.
Among other infectious diseases, at least 1,353 people were found to be suffering from hepatitis (A, B, C) while 522 were found to
be suffering from
pulmonary tuberculosis.
At least 6,720 cases of chickenpox were also reported. Meningitis (viral and bacterial) cases stood at 87, pneumonia 322, malaria 203 and six cases of leprosy.
Among sexually-transmitted diseases, 52 cases were of syphilis and 58 of gonorrhea.
