SPTC Director-General Abdullah Al Zari told Khaleej Times that tenders had already been invited for the ambitious project.

"Tenders have been invited and SPTC aims at finalising them by July for 390 air-conditioned bus shelters in different parts of the emirate," he said, adding that no further details could be revealed.

As a welcome relief for the public, SPTC started its public transport service last month.

However, Khaleej Times, in its report on June 16, had highlighted the need for basic shelters at bus stops.

Currently, SPTC is running a single route, No. 14, starting from Al Sharq Terminal to Sharjah International Airport. Already, the bus service has received a positive response with people preferring buses to taxis, say SPTC officials.

Besides, 68 bus-stop signs out of the total 1,300 have already been placed on different routes.

Meanwhile, passengers have welcomed the news of the AC bus shelters.

"The news is a relief. At present, there are no basic shelters at the bus stops. So, it will be a big relief to wait for the bus in an AC shelter," opined Mariam B.

"I also request the SPTC to allocate more seats for women," she added.
