Earlier this week, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, made a surprise spot visit to several government departments in Dubai.

Following the news, social media users were abuzz in the country.

But this surprise action came as no surprise to many, as this has been the Dubai Ruler's mode operandi for decades.

But what exactly should people takeaway from this week's spot visits?

1. Might of social media: "Social media channels have a role in creating constructive engagement which can stimulate innovative thinking." - Shaikh Mohammed

One of the biggest takeaways from the visits is the fact that he published the news on social media first. A huge advocate of new media, the Dubai Ruler proved just how powerful a tool it is as the reaction from the Dubai community was huge. Even the next day, many social media users were waiting for the results of this visit - which consequently was the letting go of some officials to make way for new ones. (Shaikh Mohammed has more than 10.5 million followers across his social media networks - five million of which are on Twitter).

2. Out with the old, in with the new - "I learn from the youngest and am still at the beginning of the road with no arrogance." - Shaikh Mohammed

This shake up in roles in the government departments is testament that Shaikh Mohammed is thinking about first, second, third and fourth generations. Indirectly, he is speaking to the youth, telling them to step forward with a smile, and he will be there with them to take Dubai to the next level.

3. Do not rest on laurels - "A few mistakes made by a person working productively costs far less than a person paralysed by laziness or fear." - Shaikh Mohammed

The visits have proved that the Dubai government is not in favour of routine. Routine prevents innovation, and Dubai favours innovation. The message here is that changes will continue and nobody will inherit their position, they will work for it. Shaikh Mohammed once said: "Change or you will be changed: Leadership is a service, not a gateway to privilege" so his message to the new generations is give all your power and strength to your job, and don't take time for granted.

4. Focus on achievements - "The race for excellence has no finish line." - Shaikh Mohammed

In touring the government departments and speaking to several officials, Shaikh Mohammed was keen to reiterate the message that they need to pay attention to the work of real achievement and not just focus on awards. Real success is not an exhibit, and exhibiting awards devolves of real success.

To end, we will leave you with this final quote from Shaikh Mohammed: "Do we have to stand still to avoid the risk of falling, or stop flying for fear of an air crash? Ever since I took a leadership role, I have encountered several challenges. But I never gave up and I never bowed to them."
