4kg of hashish seized, two held

AJMAN — Ajman Police with the help of Customs officials at the Ajman Port seized 4kg of hashish in parcels sent from an east African country and arrested two Africans while fleeing the country.

Brigadier Rashid Mujlad, Head of Investigation and Criminal Research Directorate of Ajman Police, told Khaleej Times yesterday that this is the first-ever drug seizure at the Ajman Port.

One of the suspects had a valid residency visa on him while the other has been staying in the country illegally, he said but refused to disclose their exact nationalities.

He said customs officials got suspicious of some parcels in plastic bags on which was written ‘Coffee’ and alerted the CID wing of the police on Wednesday. The parcels were addressed to an African based in the UAE.

Before the CIDs arrived at the port, one of the suspects approached the Customs Department for the parcels, but was told that they had to be inspected. Sensing trouble, the person went back and never showed up again.

Brigadier Mujlad said the forensic tests proved that the parcels had hashish.

The police found the address on the parcels was wrong but customs officials had described the features of the car used by the person who approached the Customs Department. They tracked down the car and arrested him and another person on Thursday. Brigadier Mujlad said they were fleeing the country.

Brigadier Mujlad appreciated the cooperation of the customs officials. He said the Ajman Police are making great efforts to prevent smuggling of drugs into the country.
