Mohammed Obaid Al Mulla, Director-General of DTC, said that the number of taxis would be increased to deliver services at hotels, commercial centres and other services compounds. He said that the DTC was also considering the replacement of old vehicles with 300 brand new station wagons as soon as possible.
He also said that the DTC would soon start multi-type transport services for the future needs of public transport users — nationals, expatriates and tourists whose numbers are continuously on the rise.
“Several steps have been taken to ensure round-the-clock services to the public. Drivers will also be trained to remain for long periods in the market in order to subsequently increase their trips and commissions. We are expanding our operations in line with our attempts to upgrade our technologies which provide drivers and managers with the necessary methods to dispatch their services,” he explained.
He said that after studying the market’s demands and to stay abreast of Dubai’s economic and infrastructural growth, the corporation is developing the quality of its services with the upcoming construction projects in Dubai.
Mulla also said that operational statistics showed that there was a substantial growth in the numbers of taxi trips and users between 2003-2004, whereby taxi trips during 2003 had reached 191,000 trips and are expected to rise by three million trips to reach 222,000 trips by the end of current year.
Giving statistics on the growth of Dubai he said: “Dubai’s population has increased at an annual average of 5.56 per cent, registered vehicles at 10 per cent, single roads lengths at 4.3 per cent and multiple roads lengths at 10 per cent. Arrivals at Dubai international Airport have increased by 27 per cent.”
“The DTC is providing transport facilities to over 2.2 million people. Statistics by the Dubai Tourism Department showed an increase in hotel occupations by 4.3 per cent whereby over 2.6 million visitors have made use of Dubai’s hotels and furnished apartments during the first half of current year,” he explained.
