The admission of physically and mentally impaired students is part of the Ministry of Education’s strategy to integrate students with special needs into mainstream schools.

The ministry would fully integrate disabled students within the next 10 years, depending on the availability of the necessary resources, said Dr. Aiysha Al Jalahma, Director of the Special Needs Programmes Department at the MoE.

A total of five physically-impaired students were integrated, she said. Others included one student with congenital deformities, three thalassemic students, four with hearing-impairment and poor vision, three with visual impairment, one with stammering problem, three with Down’s Syndrome, one with autism, six who are slow in learning, five with hyperactivity and others with different disabilities, she added.
