Around 60 beggars have been arrested since the start of Ramadan, as part of campaigns launched by Dubai Municipality to eradicate begging. Khalifa Hareb, Director of the Properties Department at Dubai Municipality, said authorities are constantly warning people against encouraging beggars. The inspections crack down on individual fundraising, product-selling on public roads and in front of mosques, street vendors and public car washes,. He added that begging is an illegal practice that leads to other crimes like stealing.
The campaigns, carried out in cooperation with Dubai Police and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai, have been intensified in older, traditional areas. Al Ras and Bur Dubai are the areas where people are most likely to be found begging, at the apartment buildings.
