All the birds that had been put up for sale in the two shops were found in a cage. The sale of these birds is in violation of the country’s laws.
Dr Saif Al Ghais, Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Department in Ras Al Khaimah said the federal law No.24 of the year 1999 for environmental protection and development prohibits the sale of wild birds, including the white-cheeked Bulbul, biologically known as Pycnonotus Leucogenys.
He said traders had illegally caught the birds from different areas of the emirate.
“White-cheeked Bulbuls are wild birds and are not pets. No one is allowed to catch or sell these birds unless he gets permission from the concerned government authorities,” said Dr Ghais.
According to Dr Ghais, the inspectors from the environmental Protection Department found out that the violators (bird sellers) were not aware of the law that prohibits the catching and sale of the Bulbul.
He noted that the violators were given official warnings and committed themselves not to repeat the violations.
The department freed all the seized birds.
