Seven children were killed and 105 others were injured in traffic accidents reported in Dubai in the first 11 months of the current year. Among the injured, 20 children aged up to eight years were hit by cars.
According to Major-General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the general department of traffic of the Dubai Police, most of the casualties (76) occurred when the children were accompanied by their parents. Shockingly, police records show that six of the victims were children driving cars illegally.
He said that the victims included 72 boys and 40 girls.
He referred to the recent death of an Indian boy, who was run over in Dubai's Murshid Bazaar area. Yaala Mohstisham was riding his bicycle in an erratic manner when he was run over.
Maj-Gen Al Mazroui said accidents involving children are tragic and can be avoided if parents keep a watchful eye on them. Some children, he said, were run over by family members.
He referred to the widespread practice of allowing children to sit in parents' laps in cars or making them sit in the front without wearing a seatbelt. This, he added, is very dangerous.
Maj-Gen Al Mazroui said the traffic department regularly launches campaigns to spread traffic awareness among students.
