The Waste Management Department at the Dubai Municipality has prepared a comprehensive plan for the clean-up and removal of waste resulting from the New Year celebrations in the city.
The main areas of clean-up will include The Burj Khalifa, which becomes the focus of world attention during the New Year celebrations, the Business Bay and the Downtown city centre and Dubai Water Canal, in addition to the streets of Jumeirah and Shaikh Zayed Road.
The municipality has set up an integrated working team consisting of 717 workers and volunteers to undertake the cleanup activities at the New Year celebration sites, said Abdul Majeed Sifai, director of Waste Management Department.
He confirmed that all the preparations are being done in coordination with the Burj Khalifa administration and the private sector establishments, who are responsible for a number of celebrations in the main areas of the city, in order to involve them in the cleanup operations.
"We have opened registration for teams of volunteers and individuals, who wish to participate in the cleanup activities in various places, especially after midnight. The cleanup will start after 2am, as the proportion of waste begins to increase at the end of the celebrations and shows," he said.
"As for manpower, the department has allocated 353 cleaners, and 20 specialised supervisors from the Operations and Cleaning Services Section.
"Cooperation is also sought from the private sector companies to provide 364 volunteers to help our cleaners in the clean-up operations. In addition to that, we will be distributing 106 additional waste containers of different sizes in the most congested areas and will provide a number of sand-sweepers to clean the main roads," he said.
"The "Sanid" team, consisting of 40 officers and monitors and 500 cleaners, would be ready for rapid intervention in case of emergency. We will also publish awareness advertisements, through local newspapers and the municipality-approved social networking sites, calling for the public revellers to comply with the hygiene rules," said Sifai.
