The Dubai Police carried out 289 maritime missions and dealt with 73 accidents in 2016, a top official has revealed. The missions included saving people from drowning, answering calls of accidents between ships, boats and waterbikes and guiding ships that drifted.
Major Ali Abdullah Algosaib Naqbi, head of the maritime rescue department, explained that if accidents are reported near a beach, water scooters and boats are pressed into action to ensure a speedy operation.
The police also use satellite coordinates for its rescue missions of people lost in the sea.
He pointed out that the Dubai Police are always ready to deal with emergencies on the beaches, noting that there are eight rescue points to deal with emergency situations in various parts of the emirate.
Divers and lifeguards at these points are equipped with boats, water scooters and other advanced rescue tools.
He pointed out that the Dubai Police are well-prepared to meet emergency situations with a response time of 7 to 8 minutes, while the average rescue time is 12 minutes.
He thanked the maritime rescue teams at various parts of Dubai for their readiness and willingness to rescue people and provide better service.
Major Al Naqbi asked sea-goers to take preventive measures and to be cautious while swimming to avoid marine currents and high waves. He urged the public to abide by the instructions and requirements set by the municipality and the Dubai Police.
People can contact the operations room at the Dubai Police on 999 in the event of emergencies, describing the place of emergency accurately and clearly, he added.
