As much as 70 per cent of the treated sewage water in Ras Al Khaimah is currently used for irrigation purposes, according to a senior official at the Department of Public Works.
"This amount of reused sewage water will be spiked by 10 per cent every year and we aim to raise the bar to 80 per cent this year," said Ahmad Muhammad Al Hammadi, director-general of the department.
"The move is meant to depend less on the natural water being used in irrigating ornamental plants."
The department is also to build three sewage water treatment stations in Butain Al Samar district, said Al Hammadi.
The surplus treated water, being used in irrigating ornamental trees, will help increase the green areas in the emirate, he added.
