Speaking at a continuing medical education programme organised by the Fathima Medical Centre, Dr Babu said that Atherothrombosis is a new concept emphasising the role of thrombosis (blood clotting along with artherosclerosis.)

Other manifestations are brain attack, leading to paralysis of one half of the body, kidney failure, loss of limb by gangrene etc.

He pointed to high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle as the biggest risk factors for Atherothrombosis. He said that awareness was still rather low about the disease and simple lifestyle changes could bring about a dramatic reduction in the prevalence of this dreaded disease.

Walking daily for 30-45 minutes, reduction in the intake of salt, reduction in the consumption of oily foods, and actions like using the staircase instead of the lift can help.
