A peek into Iranian folklore

DUBAI—Heritage Surprises, one among the Ten Surprises of DSS 2007, is a hugely popular event as it attracts visitors interested in history, culture, and art.

Throughout Dubai Summer Surprise, Heritage Surprises will feature shows, exhibitions, and workshops related to culture from around the world. The second week of Heritage Surprises is showcasing a one of a kind recital by a group of gifted Iranian musicians and singers till July 4.

The seven-member band is led by Masood, a native of Shiraz in Iran, and a specialist in playing the kamonche, a four-stringed instrument akin to the violin. Having played the kamonche for over twenty years, Masood traces the origin of the kashkaay. “The term kashkaay relates not only to music but to a people whose history can be traced back to the Sassanid period. Our music is distinct even when it is termed Iranian, because the lyrics sung are in the Turkish language.”

The women in the group focus on singing, the lyrics mostly related to ancient tales of love of war and every song has a prelude where Masood sets the tempo to be followed.

After about four songs, the women and two men in the group stand ready for Masood’s nod to begin their performance of folklore dance. The dance lasts for almost 15 minutes and brings to end a spectacular show of talent and culture.

Till July 4^th, visitors can also view traditional Iranian handicrafts that include pottery, jewellery, metal sculptures, baskets, Persian rugs, and a host of other exquisite pieces at Dubai Festival City.
