With this addition, the number of taxis operating under the SPTC banner would go up to 5,000.
The announcement was made at Al Jubail bus station on Monday by SPTC General Manager Abdullah Al Zari. While 550 vehicles have started operating, the remaining 450 are expected to join the fleet by the year-end.
'The step has been taken to give a boost to tourism in the emirate. But before that, we need to strengthen the public transport,' explained Al Zari.
He also said that as a regulating body SPTC was also pushing for transparency to ensure the efficiency of the taxi service in the emirate.
'The new taxis belong to Sharjah Taxi, which is the fifth operator in the emirate,' he said, adding that while 500 vehicles will be directly operated by Sharjah Taxi, the remaining 500 would be managed by the four current operators - Union Taxi, Citi Taxi, Emirates and Advantage Taxi.
