DUBAI — They came from all over the city in their gleaming, powerful Harleys, Hondas, Yamahas, Suzukis and BMWs with teddy bears, camels, rag dolls, telley tubees, dogs, cats and what-have-you strapped to their bikes for a fun ride to Hatta.

On a bright Friday morning the strapping men — and a few lovely ladies — were ready to experience the real freedom that only a motorbike can give. They gunned their machines and the engines rumbled like a minor earthquake. They then set off for their “Toy Run” to Hatta and back. It was the ultimate in cool, laid-back, safe biking; and the 80 or more riders, all dressed in boots, helmets, leathers and gloves, with toys as ‘passengers’, were doing it for a noble cause.

The ride over, the bikers returned to the Seafarers Club where the toys were placed on a makeshift table and each toy fetched an amount given willingly by the drivers. The money collected will be sent for an hospice for orphans.

The idea for a ‘Toy Run’ came from Colin Locke, an adventure rider who’s riding his BMW through Jordan, Syria, Turkey and Iran. Locke decided to include this city that has a big heart. He wasn’t disappointed. The bikers came out in large numbers for the ride that would help set an orphan back on his feet again.
