The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has removed 120 water/diesel tankers abandoned in public parking areas and open yards at Baniyas.
The move was part of a campaign by the municipality at Baniyas East 12-13, targeting abandoned vehicles as part of enforcing laws governing the appearance and beautification of the city.
The objective of the campaign is to educate the general public about the importance of cleaning vehicles and stop leaving them unattended for prolonged periods; which results in distorting the civilised appearance of the city.
The drive underscores the commitment of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport and the Abu Dhabi City Municipality to clean the city, improve the overall appearance of the neighbourhood, enhance the safety and security aspects, curb environmental pollution, raise the public awareness and promote the role of the public in protecting and conserving the environment.
The campaign alerted owners of abandoned water and diesel tankers about the importance of removing these vehicles, but some of them hadn't responded to the call.
As regards the official procedures and fines slapped against offenders, the municipality confirmed that it starts by issuing official notices to offenders through affixing them on violating vehicles for three days. If there is no response from the owners, a fine of Dh3,000 is slapped on each one of them.
The offending vehicles were towed away to the impounding yard at Baniyas and will only be released after the fine is paid.
During the campaign, the ADM spotted piling of waste and vehicles abandoned in public areas and engaging in illegal activities such as selling items without licence from the competent bodies.
Over the past two years, the municipality issued more than 30-offence tickets, whereas during the current campaign, two offence tickets each for Dh3,000 were issued and 35 notices were served.
According to law, the notice is valid for three days, following which the next step will be taken i.e. issuing offence tickets and removing the tankers to the impounding area.
