Under the agreement, public and private schools will get the Internet connection at a third of the normal cost, Dr Gamal Al Meheiry, the undersecretary in the ministry, said yesterday.

The connection will be made available to all schools in a month’s time by when they will be eqipped with infrastructure like computers for students of all grades, Al Meheiry told reporters.

”We have have already provided 8,250 computers and trained around 600 teachers to be followed by another 1,000,” Al Suwaidy said.

Ahmad Abdul Kareem Gulfar, the Etisalat Gerneral Manager, said the service provided to the schools would include free installation of ‘Business One’ connection, which normally costs Dh200 and free router device, which costs Dh600, along with a Dh500 monthly rent for Internet service at two megabits per second as against the normal monthly rent of Dh1,995.

Also included in the package will be data transfer to the tune of 20 megabytes every month and a nominal fee of Dh150 for every 500 megabytes exceeding the maximum limit, he said.

In future Etisalat would look into providing more advanced services to schools such as digital ADSL, email accounts and school web sites, said Abdullah Hashim, the senior manager at Etisalat.
