Ajman forensic lab to be inaugurated by year-end

AJMAN — Since its inception in July 2006, the Ajman Forensic Laboratory has handled 52 forensic cases, of which 44 were death-related investigations. Nearly 13 per cent of cases were pertaining to criminal acts.

The laboratory, located in the Al Jarf area, will be officially inaugurated by this year-end by His Highness Shaikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman.

Speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday Col. Ali Alwan, Director-General of Ajman Police, said the laboratory is currently functioning at 20 per cent capacity.

“The laboratory is equipped with advanced technological equipment which will be used for anatomy and blood tests and narcotic analysis. The laboratory will help save time and effort in unravelling crime mysteries and facilitate the quick arrest of criminals,” Alwan said.

He said the laboratory was established under instructions of Shaikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, to help enhance the performance of the law-enforcement agencies in the emirate. It is part of Ajman’s police services expansion project.

The new lab will also assist the police departments of Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain in forensic examinations and crime scene investigations.

Currently, there are two forensic assistants at the laboratory to cater to the needs of police departments in Ajman, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain, Alwan said.

The laboratory complex also houses two morgues, one of which can accommodate 25 corpses.

There are also plans to set up a facility for DNA tests at the laboratory, Alwan stated.
