The expansion of Al Maktoum Bridge is part of an integrated plan to increase the number of lanes on Dubai Creek to 38 in order to ease and increase the traffic flow in two directions between the two parts of Dubai. Meanwhile, the RTA opened Al Sofouh Al Barsha on Sheikh Zayed Road for traffic. The bridge comprises two lanes each side and links Al Barsha and Sofouh districts.

The opening of the two bridges is in line with the strategic plans of the RTA, which confirm to the Dubai Strategic Plan.

The plan includes road network development, whereby the roads will be increased by 500km and lanes on the creek to 47 by 2008 and to 100 lanes by 2020. Ring roads and intersections will be constructed and traffic smart system will be installed.

Engineer Maitha bin Udai, executive director of RTA said, “These strategic projects reflect endeavour of the RTA to ease traffic jams on Dubai roads to ensure easy and safe transport for all through execution of a series of new projects and face-lifting of a number of major roads to improve their capacity and efficiency.”
