The move comes as recognition of the efforts of Emirati and expatriate calligraphers to promote Islamic arts in the Emirate of Sharjah and beyond.
Commenting on the Sharjah Ruler’s gesture, Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Information, said that Shaikh Sultan backs Arabic Calligraphy as “being one of the pillars of national identity and a field of human creativity that inspires our art and highlights it in the context of international arts.”
Al Owais added that upon the directives of Shaikh Sultan, the department has held a series of meetings with calligraphers so as to enable the setting up of the society.
