Route number 77 is being launched as per the plan since the demand for public buses in the emirate has increased considerably, an official of the Sharjah Public Transport Corporation told Khaleej Times on Wednesday.
“Though we are starting with two buses today, we will increase as and when we see further increase in demand on this route,” said Fahd Al Awadi, General Manager of KGL, the Kuwaiti company managing the bus fleet of the SPTC.
The express route is expected to gain popularity in a short time since it is the only bus route that covers that particular area, added Al Awadi. However, in an earlier interview, Al Awadi had admitted that launch of some new routes had been put off due to shortage of bus drivers. “We have 61 vehicles that are ready, but until the driver shortage is met, we cannot start anymore new routes,” he had said. asmaalizain@khaleejtimes.com
