Five hundred car seats will be distributed by General Motors Middle East Operations (GM) and Chevrolet in cooperation with Dubai Health Authority (DHA) to support Dubai’s Child Injury Prevention Strategy announced last week. Sponsored by Chevrolet, the child injury prevention organisation, Safe Kids Worldwide, sent experts from the US to equip maternity nurses with the knowledge to educate new parents on the vital role child car seats play in preventing fatal injuries in the event of a road accident. The training sessions took place on October 18.

The Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix child seats are designed for children weighing up to 13kg (from birth to nine years).

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of infant mortality in the UAE and account for 63 per cent of all child deaths. According to research, special car seats can reduce fatal injuries in children by up to 71 per cent and are said to be the most effective method of reducing infant mortality in accidents.

The DHA announced last week that it was developing a consolidated policy framework to prevent child injuries. The strategy will include a unified reporting and surveillance system that aims at reducing the significant personal, social and economic burden of injury on the residents and health system.
