After extensively searching for a doctor to conduct her complicated surgery, American citizen Afshan Hai chose to travel across the globe to Dubai to get treated by Dubai Health Authority's Latifa Hospital.
Hai who lives in Sans Francisco started experiencing pain 14 years ago, and after getting consultation from a series of doctors, she was formally diagnosed with endometriosis four years ago.
Endometriosis is a painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the insides of a women's uterus - the endometrium - grows outside the uterus. Endometriosis most commonly involves women's ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining their pelvis.
Over the span of four years Hai researched for a highly experienced doctor who can treat her using minimally invasive techniques. "I first heard about Professor Arnaud Wattiez, Gynocology Consultant at Latifa Hospital from my cousin. She had my disorder and underwent two failed surgeries in the US. She was then treated successfully by Professor Wattiez. So I decided to fly to Dubai to get treated by him."
Dr Professor Wattiez, who is the former president of the European Society of Gynecological Endoscopy, and Dr Razan Nasser, Specialist Registrar at Latifa hospital, conducted a laparoscopic surgery to remove Afshan's uterus without affecting any other organs.
"I was able to walk right after the surgery and I will be discharged today. The chronic pain I was experiencing all these year has stopped overnight. I was also experiencing numbness in my feet for the last year and a half and right after the surgery the sensation in my feet returned," she said.
Dr Wattiez said the surgery was complicated but thanks to the laparoscopic techniques which increase precision, it was completed successfully. -
