Anti-acidity suspension Carelox was withdrawn from the local market on Tuesday after the Ministry of Health (MoH) discovered that the medicine contained bacteria that was highly harmful for human health.

Dr Amin Al Amiri, Executive Director at the Department of Medical Practices and Licensing at the MoH said it was discovered during an inspection campaign that laboratory workers recorded false results so that the product could pass the MoH tests. All directors of medical zones and hospitals, pharmacies and drug stores have been asked to withdraw the product immediately.

Following the discovery, the laboratory manager has resigned from the job while the technician responsible has been suspended and is under investigation by the MoH.

“The laboratory technician at the factory admitted that he did not conduct the required bacteria-free test on all samples and recorded false results so that the product could pass,” explained Dr Amiri. Without specifying, Dr Amiri said that several other serious irregularities were also discovered at the Jebel-Ali based plant, and they were being investigated.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, the General Manager of the pharmaceutical firm, Swayam Prakash said that three batches of the medicine (produced from November till date) had been discovered with the bacteria. “However, the MoH has asked us that some of the earlier batches should also be recalled as a precautionary measure,” he said. Prakash, however, was unable to provide the exact quantity of the medicine that has been recalled. “The medicine is available in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. There have been no such issues earlier,” he clarified.
