Registration and medical checkups for the first batch of recruits in the mandatory military service started on Sunday. The four conscription centres countrywide saw a large rush of applicants.

The first batch of cadets in the military service will comprise those who have completed secondary school this year.

The four centres — Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain camp, Al Rahmaniya Camp in Sharjah and Liwa camp in the Western Region — will continue accepting cadets for the first batch (males) until July 17.

According to the conditions for joining the military service, the applicant should be a UAE male citizen with a minimum age of 18 and should have completed secondary school.

Applicants must register at the nearest centre from his place of residence before July 17. Those who do not conform to the conditions mentioned above will be called later, as the first batch is scheduled to commence service by the end of August.

The National Service Authority will give preference to those who have scored over 90 per cent marks in the general secondary school certificate exam 2013- 2014. They can either join the first batch immediately or postpone joining the service until graduation.

Those who have scored less than 90 per cent will get a chance to join the first batch if they meet the rest of the criteria and obtain approval of the committee. Those who fail the general secondary school certificate exams will have their admission to the military service centres postponed until they do a re-test.
