Art movie bonanza to continue

ABU DHABI — There is some good news for art cinema lovers. The art movies event, which had kicked off in the capital in November last year, will continue in 2007 as well.

Art films will be shown at Century Cinemas in Abu Dhabi Mall on every two Sundays, from 8.45pm.

The organisers, the embassies of Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Switzerland, have each contributed with one or more films from their own countries.

The sixth session of European Art Movies will restart on January 14 with I Nostalgos (The Homesick), a Greek film (2004 ) by Eleni Alexandrakis.

The movie tells the story of Anna, a young woman married to a much older man. She longs to see her home island, which she has not visited since she got married, and which is just across the island where she lives now.

Anna persuades Mathio, a young shepherd, to take her there with a “borrowed” boat. Hoping for a romantic adventure, he accepts, although all the young woman wants is to see her island. Secretly, the husband follows her.

The festival will then continue with Balseros (The Rafters) by Carlos Bosch (Spain 2002), Sophie Scholl – Die Letzten Tage (The Last Days) by Marc Rothemund (Germany 2005), Lijmen/Het Been (Soft Soap) by Robbe De Hert (Belgium 2000), Smoking-Room by Roger Gual and Julio D. Wallovits (Spain 2002), Pupendo (the name of a tricky child’s game) by Jan Hrebejk (Czech Republic 2003), Meine, Schwester das Biest (She, Me and Her) by Reinhard Schwabenitzky (Austria 2003), Karakter (Character) by Mike van Diem (Netherlands 1997), Le Role de sa Vie (The Meaning of her Life) by Francois Favrat (France 2004), and Persona non Grata (Unwanted Person) by Krzysztof Zanussi (Poland 2005).

The 2007 edition of art movies will conclude with Tout un Hiver sans Feu (All Winter without Fire) by Greg Zglinski (Swiss 2004), which will be screened on June 10.

The same movies will also be screened in Al Ain, on different days.
