The campaign will be held in collaboration with the Health Authority in Abu Dhabi (HAAD) and the Dubai Health Authority to raise awareness among citizens and residents on how to combat and prevent the disease.

As part of the campaign, health experts will give medical advice and answer queries related to the disease at the malls. They will also distribute leaflets and fliers providing details on the disease and methods of prevention.

Already, the ministry and the Awqaf are spreading the word through sermons, preaching and counselling at community and residential mosques.

Meanwhile, Dr Ali bin Shukr, Director-General of the ministry and Chairman of the Technical Health Committee to Combat Swine Flu, assured the public on Wednesday that there was no need to panic. He called upon members of the community to cooperate and follow the ministry’s guidelines in reporting suspected cases.

The ministry will also launch awareness messages through the print and electronic media as well as invite specialists to give details about the virus, spread of the disease and prevention.

According to the World Health Organisation, Eastern Mediterranean Region, a total of 96 laboratory-confirmed cases of H1N1 virus infection with no death were reported to the regional office by 11 member states on June 17, among which 22 new cases were reported from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen.

Worldwide, the WHO this week reported that 35,928 people in 76 countries have been infected with swine flu, and 163 have died.asmaalizain@khaleejtimes.com
