Excessive use of plastic could even lead to infertility, warns a documentary.
The documentary Bag It featuring the environmental impact of excessive usage of plastic was screened at Madinat Theatre, on World Environment Day, which falls on June 5 every year.
Around 350 people from different age groups attended the free screening of the film intended to educate about the harm that plastic does to our lives and the environment.
Free gifts were distributed among children who were present at the event. The documentary says certain chemicals such as bisphenol A (organic compound used to make plastic) and phthalates (substance added to increase the elasticity) found in plastic products affects the growth of foetus.
However, the good news is that their effects can be reversed in the human body. Another alarming environmental issue is the depletion of marine life because of dumping of plastic waste in water bodies.
A positive change can be brought if we adopt responsible behaviour and reduce use of plastic and switch to eco-friendly alternatives.
