Bahrain pearl trade has come a long way

DUBAI — Bahrain is a Gulf country that is rich in not only natural resources but also culture and heritage. That is the image Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Assistant Under-secretary for the Sector of Culture and Heritage in Bahrain’s Ministry of Information, would like to project and promote for her country.

Shaikha Mai, who was in Dubai yesterday to brief the Press about the forthcoming International Pearl Convention, said the key objective of the event is the revival of the region’s pearl industry.

“Bahrain has come a long way in the pearl industry. We have high-end finishing techniques whereas the pearl industry has become greatly expanded. In this industry, pearls could be farmed like an agricultural crop. I look forward to taking part in the forthcoming convention which would be of great importance to the pearl industry in the region,” she said.

Shaikha Mai depicted pearls as a real asset and a good investment commodity. “We aim to provide an opportunity to pearl collectors and investors to interact closely. In recent years, there has been a growing and renewed interest in the pearl industry,” she added.

In the meantime, Khaled Al Sayegh, Chairman, Pearl Revival Committee, deemed the first International Pearl Convention as a prelude to a remarkable and unique revival of pearl industry.

The four-day convention opens on November 18.
