In a step to encourage drivers to avoid traffic violations and black points and ensure road safety, the Traffic General Secretariat of the Ministry of Interior has signed an agreement with Emirates Insurance Companies Association regarding this.
In the initial years, drivers will be given a discount in their insurance amount, an official from the Ministry of Interior said. After the first year without any violation, drivers will be given a discount of 20 per cent of his insurance policy and it will be 30 per cent in the second year. The discount will be increased to 35 per cent in the third year.
Speaking in a programme (Amman ya Beladi) broadcast in Sharjah Radio, Brigadier Ghaith Al Zaabi, Director-General of Traffic Coordination at the Ministry of Interior said that this initiative would contribute to solve traffic issues in many dimensions. He urged all motorists to be responsible towards following the traffic law to decrease accidents. Talking about the Traffic Week organised by the ministry throughout the country, he said that this year’s slogan ‘Together to curb traffic accidents’ aimed at ensuring safety and reduce accidents.
The number of fatal accidents is being reduced every year since 2008 because of the intensive awareness programmes being conducted by the ministry. “We aimed at conveying the traffic safety message to 3.5 million people of various nationalities, who are driving 2,236 cars registered in the country,” he said.
Col Arif Al Shamsi, Director of the Traffic Department of the Sharjah Police, said that the traffic week is now focusing on traffic awareness programmes in coordination with other government and private departments in addition to intensifying the inspections being carried out throughout the year to ensure road safety.
Brig. Aihssan Al Aweesh, Deputy Director Of Traffic Department in Al Kuwait, said that the observation of annual Traffic Week in the GCC had contributed to reducing number of deaths, as 1,071 death cases were reported in 2009 in all AGCC countries while in 2010 the number was reduced by 23 per cent to 826 deaths including 211 of AGCC citizens whose age range between 18 to 30 years old. An average of 20 accidents are happening everyday, causing 25 injuries and two deaths, which means the monthly average of death is 68 per cent.
