Students in the UAE have been exposed to a certain set of digital platforms in daily classes, but following the pandemic, this is the first-time universities have fully transitioned from regular sessions into virtual classrooms. While the concept has been exciting, some may find it a challenge to adapt to the new norm. Here are some tips:
Dress up: Attending class has never been more comfortable, but it can be easy to slip into tardiness. Set up a routine similar to what you would follow when attending regular classes. Wake up on time and do some light stretches. While it may be great to sit in your PJs all day long, getting dressed to study is motivation in itself.
Switch off but stay focused: With many of us homebound, distractions are aplenty - from noisy siblings to social media notifications. Put your phone on silent and make it known to your family members that you have sessions in order. You can leave sticky notes in a common area - either sticky notes on the fridge or in the living room - about your class timings, so you don't have anyone bursting in during a virtual class.
Set up a study corner: If you have your own room, know that you are blessed and take advantage of it. Set up a clutter-free corner - that includes additional mobile devices and items that could encourage you to fidget. In case you're in an area where privacy can't be guaranteed, find alternatives. The balcony or a secluded area in your building hallway helps focus (don't forget to wear a mask and gloves). Noise-cancelling headphones are also a great investment in these cases.
Check your tech: Familiarise yourself with your university's digital tools when study is not session so you can be more productive during classes, submit assignments on time, and attend exams at ease. Rather than relying on your mobile phone, a desktop or laptop is highly recommended in order to enjoy e-learning at its full potential. Make sure your hardware and software is up to date, and clear your browser cache for improved online sessions.
Organise your time: Time management and discipline is essential for online learning. You need to take initiative and be accountable for your own work, without instructors or parents looking over your shoulder. Review every class syllabus and put due dates for assignments and exams in your device calendar along with reminders a few days ahead of each due date. Don't forget to take notes during class.
Don't forget to take breaks: Being glued to digital devices for long hours can take a toll on us. Set an alarm to take five or 10-minute breaks between recorded lectures and studies. During this time, step away from your seat, walk around the house and do some stretches. Focus on health and well-being, and don't skip out on a balanced diet. If you're fasting, make sure to replenish well after Iftar. Choose water over caffeinated drinks.
